Wer meinem Blog folgt, hat vermutlich schon bemerkt, dass ich von den Greifautomaten in Taiwan etwas besessen bin. Aber nicht, weil ich an den Automaten mein ganzes Geld verzocke, sondern weil mich dieses Phänomen hier so fasziniert. In meinem ersten Artikel (hier) vom März 2018, habe ich das Konzept und den Aufstieg der Spielhallen beschrieben. Damals habe ich auch prognostiziert, dass Ende 2018 der ganze Spaß wieder vorbei sein wird. Zu meiner, und vermutlich auch vieler anderer, Überraschung nahm die Anzahl der Spielhallen im Jahr 2018 stark zu, so dass zum Ende des Jahres sie den größten Teil zur Vergnügungssteuer beitrugen (mehr dazu hier). Zu diesem Zeitpunkt gab es in Taiwan fast mehr Spielhallen mit Greifautomaten als 7eleven convenience stores.
Das Wachstum stoppte auch Anfang 2019 nicht. Die Anzahl der Automaten nahm stetig zu, so dass sich die Taiwanesische Zentralbank veranlasst sah, zusätzliche 10 NT$ Münzen in Umlauf zu bringen. Im Februar 2019 gab es in Taiwan 3.353 Greifautomatenaufsteller und mehr als 10.000 Spielhallen nur mit Greifautomaten. Das sind mehr als alle convenience stores zusammen. Und das heißt was in Taiwan. Es stellte sich dann aber heraus, dass die meisten Spielhallen illegal sind. Bei einer Untersuchung in den größeren Städten Taiwans stellte man fest, dass in 70% aller Spielhallen illegale Produkte als Gewinne angeboten wurden, oder die Spielhallen nicht den Regeln und Gesetzen entsprachen. Zum Beispiel befanden sich viele zu nahe (im Umkreis von 100 m) an einer Schule.
Obwohl die Anzahl der Spielhallen weiter steigt und es immer noch wie ein gutes Geschäft aussieht, verändert sich etwas. Zumindest in meiner Nachbarschaft haben in den letzten Wochen einige Spielhallen wieder geschlossen. Überraschenderweise waren es auch Spielhallen die durch ihre Lage eigentlich viele Menschen angezogen haben. Hier ist eine aktualisierte Liste der Spielhallen in meiner Nachbarschaft.
Readers who follow my blog know that I have some obsession with claw arcade machines. However, it is not about playing them, but wondering about the success of this seemingly unsuccessful business. In my first article (here), I described the phenomenon and predicted that they will not survive until the end of 2018. However, the claw arcade business grew surprisingly strong and by end 2018, it was the biggest contributor for the amusement tax (read about it here). At that time there were almost more claw machine arcades than 7eleven convenience stores in Taiwan.
In the beginning of 2019 the trend did not stopped. It went even so far, that the Central Bank of Taiwan decided to issue more 10 NT$ coins to cope with the demand raised by the claw machines. Moreover, by February 2019 in Taiwan 3,353 claw machine companies and more than 10,000 arcades existed. More than all convenience stores together. Which means something in Taiwan. However, most of the businesses seem to be illegal. According to an investigation, 70% of all surveyed arcades were either offering illegal items or violated laws and regulations for running such kind of business. For example many of them were too close (within 100 m) to schools.
Even though the numbers are growing and it seems like a good business now, something is changing, at least in my neighborhood. Over the past few weeks, several claw machine arcades closed. Surprisingly the ones that closed were in good locations with a large amount of people coming every day. Here is a review of the locations mentioned in my very first post. Let’s see what happened to the shops.
No.1: Wuxing Street, Lane 156, No. 35
Das ist die älteste Spielhalle in der Umgebung und sie ist noch immer da. Vermutlich wird diese hier alle anderen überdauern.
This arcade is still there and has not changed at all. It is the oldest in this area and I assume that it will survive the entire claw machine craze.
No. 2: Jiaxing Street No. 212
Diese Spielhalle schloss vor einigen Wochen. Nicht überraschend für mich, da die Gegend kaum Laufkundschaft hat. Erst sah es aus, als ob es einen neuen Mieter für den Laden geben würde, aber bisher hat sich nichts getan und der Laden steht noch leer.
This arcade closed a few weeks ago. First, it looked like the shop will be rented again, but still nothing happens. I am not surprised that it closed. It was not in an attractive area and the arcade was mostly empty.
No. 3: Wuxing Street, Lane 156, No. 28
Hier hat sich nicht viel verändert. Nur der Name der Spielhalle wurde geändert.
The name of this arcade has changed. However, the machines seem to be all the same.
No. 4: Jiaxing Street, Lane 216, No. 17 (?)
Diese Spielhalle hatte die kürzeste Lebensdauer. Sie schloss bereits Ende März 2018 und ein kleines Restaurant mit Teeladen hat hier eröffnet. Anscheinend läuft das Geschäft recht gut.
This arcade was the one with the shortest lifetime. It already closed end of March 2018 and a food small take out restaurant and tea-shop moved in. The business runs quite well, because the shop is still there and doing fine.
No. 5: Keelung Road, Section 2, Nr. 134-140 (?)
Die Spielhalle auf der Keelung Road schloss vor wenigen Wochen. Für mich etwas überraschend, da sie in einer sehr guten Lage befand. In direkter Nachbarschaft gibt es eine stark frequentierte Bushaltestelle, einen 7eleven und einen Nachtmarkt. Laufkundschaft gab es genug. Nur scheinbar hat sich niemand in die Spielhalle verirrt. Es könnte aber auch sein, dass die Spielhalle geschlossen wurde, da sie sich ganz knapp in der 100 m Zone um eine Schule befindet.
This arcade in Keelung Road closed a few weeks ago. To me it was a surprise because the location was actually very good. It is close to a highly frequented bus stop, a convenience store and a popular night market is around the corner. Every day many people walk here. However, probably not enough of them stepped into the arcade to win something. Another reason for closure could be that this shop was just too close to a school. But I don’t know the true reason.
No. 6: Keelung Road, Section 2, Nr. 117
Das diese Spiehalle geschlossen wurde, hat mich sehr überrascht. Sie befand sich in einer sehr guten Lage mit viel Laufkundschaft und es war fast immer jemand drinnen und hat die Automaten gefüttert. Es könnte sein, dass diese Spielhalle schliessen musste, da sie wengier als 100 m von einer Grundschule entfernt ist, was nicht erlaubt ist.
That this arcade closed was a big surprise to me. It is in a very good location and I saw always people inside. Perhaps it had to close because it was too close to a school. This arcade was indeed within 100 m to an elementary school. And according to regulations, these arcades must be in greater distance from schools.
Obwohl in meiner Nachbarschaft einige Spielhallen geschlossen haben, denke ich, dass die Welle mit den Greifautomaten in 2019 nicht schwächer wird. In anderen Teilen Taipehs kann man fast täglich neue Spielhallen enstehen sehen. Zum Beispiel ist Gongguan voll mit Spielhallen und Greifautomaten. Selbst in der Kamerastrasse tauchen jetzt schon die ersten Automaten auf. Leider kann man dort keine Fotoapparate gewinnen.
Even though several arcades in my neighborhood closed. I do not think that the business will decline anytime soon. In other parts of Taipei, I can see almost every day new claw machine arcades opening. For example, Gongguan is full with arcades. Even in the camera street, now these arcades start to pop out. Unfortunatly they don’t offer cameras as a prize.
