Welcome to my blog!

I’m Alexander Kunz – blogger, researcher, photographer, and storyteller based in Taiwan. I started this blog back in 2015, originally to share my passion for film photography. Over time, though, my focus shifted more and more toward Taiwan – a fascinating country that I’ve been lucky to call home for over a decade.

For many, Taiwan is mostly known from the headlines: a global tech hub (think TSMC), a geopolitical hotspot, or a distant travel destination with tropical vibes. But those headlines often paint a narrow picture. This blog invites you to see a different side of Taiwan – through everyday stories, off-the-beaten-path discoveries, personal reflections, and, last but not least, maps and data visualizations that I also share on my social media channels.

Alongside this blog, I work in science and data analysis, with a focus on environmental and social issues. I’ve contributed to several research projects, published in international journals, and now also help others make scientific content more accessible – whether through writing, maps, or clear and engaging visualizations.

I write most of my blog in English, but several articles are also available in German. Taiwan rarely gets much coverage in international media – and when it does, it’s often limited to political tensions or generic travel features. My goal is to offer a more nuanced perspective: to share stories and observations that spark curiosity and encourage a deeper understanding of life in Taiwan.

At the same time, film photography remains a core part of this blog. Those posts are in English to reach photography enthusiasts around the world.

If you’re curious about Taiwan – its people, everyday life, and those little things that make it unique – you’re in the right place. I’d love for you to join me on this journey.

And if you enjoy my work, consider supporting me on Ko-fi. You can buy me a coffee there – or explore exclusive content, digital maps, and other extras.

Support my work

If you enjoy what I do and want to support it, you can become a member on Ko-fi – or simply buy me a coffee there.

As a member, you’ll get early access to blog posts (even before they go live here), along with maps, infographics, and behind-the-scenes updates on ongoing projects – often weeks before I share anything on social media. Members in the highest tier, the Tea House Circle, can also suggest topics, share feedback, and help shape future content, as long as it aligns with the overall direction of my work.

Your support helps me improve the quality of what I create and gives me the financial breathing room to focus on meaningful projects.

Right now, I’m hoping to attend a course on data visualization and storytelling to improve how I present maps, data, and articles on this blog. Your support helps cover the course fee – and gives me more time to focus on what matters. Thank you!
