Der Aqua Forest oder Water Forest befindet sich im Alishan Township (阿里山鄉) nahe der Grenze von Chiayi (嘉義縣) und Nantou County (南投縣) und ist ein Waldstück, welches ursprünglich an einem Flusslauf lag. Durch das sogenannte Chichi-Erdbeben – in Taiwan 921-Erdbeben genannt – am 21. September 1999, das mit einer Magnitude von 7,7 Mw [1] eines der stärksten Beben in den letzten 100 Jahren in Taiwan war [2,3], wurde der Lauf des Shijingspan River blockiert, so das ein natürlicher Stausee mit 1 km Länge, ca. 200 Metern Breite und im Mittel 7 Metern Tiefe entstanden ist [4]. Durch den gestiegenen Wasserspiegel sind die Bäume im neuen See abgestorben und haben diese einzigartige Landschaft hinterlassen.
The Aqua Forest or Water Forest is located in the Alishan Township (阿里山鄉) near the border of Chiayi (嘉義縣) and Nantou County (南投縣). Originally the forest was located along a river. On September 21, 1999 the the Jiji-earthquake (in Taiwan called 921-earthquake) occurred. With a magnitude of 7.7 Mw [1] it was one of the strongest and most devastating earthquakes in Taiwan for the last 100 years [2,3]. Due to the earthquake the river was blocked and a lake of about 1 km length, 200 meter width and in average 7 meter depth developed [4]. The rising water level flooded the area and the trees died, leaving this special landscape.

Die Wanderung zum Aqua Forest habe ich im Januar 2013 gemacht. Das war auch meine erste Tour im taiwanesischen Hochgebirge. Technisch gesehen war es nicht wirklich Hochgebirge, da der höchste Punkt während der Wanderung auf 2213 m NN lag. Der Aqua Forest selber befindet sich auf einer Höhe von nur 1800 m NN.
I did the hike already in January 2013. At that time it was my first hike in the Taiwanese high mountains. Actually it was not really high mountains. The highest peak during the hike was 2213 m a.s.l., and the Aqua Forest itself is located at an elevation of only 1800 m a.s.l.

Wir sind von Taichung gestartet, da wir dort bei Freunden übernachtet haben. Gegen 5 Uhr in der Früh sind wir aufgebrochen und die 80 km zur Shanlinxi Forest Recreation Area (杉林溪) gefahren, wo sich der Eingang zum Wanderweg befindet. Nach 2 Stunden Fahrt waren wir im Park. Man kann natürlich auch näher am Park übernachten und sich so die lange Anfahrt sparen.
We started from Taichung where we stayed overnight at a friend’s place. At 5 a.m. in the morning we departed and drove the 80 km to the Shanlinxi Forest Recreation Area (杉林溪) where the trail entrance is located. After 2 hours driving we arrived there. Of course you can also stay somewhere closer to the park to avoid the long driving.
Gegen 7 Uhr waren wir im Park und dort habe ich zum ersten Mal in Taiwan einstellige Temperaturen gesehen.
Around 7 a.m. we arrived in the park and it was the first time that I experienced such a low temperature in Taiwan.
Vom Park sind wir mit dem Bus einige Stationen bis zum Anfang des Wanderwegs gefahren.
In the park we took the bus a few stops to reach the trail entrance.
Der Busfahrer sah aus als ob wir in Sibirien unterwegs waren.
The bus driver looked like we were going to Sibiria.
Schwer bepackt ging es dann los. Wir hatten eine Flasche Wein und Zutaten, inklusive einen Kohlkopf, dabei, da wir am See Feuertopf machen wollten. (Sorry für einige verwackelte Fotos, aber ich hatte damals keine gute Kamera dabei.)
Heavily packed we started. We also brought a bottle of wine and ingredients including one big cabbage to make hotpot for dinner. (Sorry for some blurry photos, but at that time I didn’t own a proper camera.)

Nach etwa 3 Stunden haben wir schon den höchsten Punkt erreicht. Von hier ging es dann mehr oder weniger auf einem Höhenniveau weiter.
After 3 hours hiking we reached the highest point. From here the trail continues mostly at a constant elevation.

Abstieg zum See und plötzlich taucht mitten im Wald ein altes Häuschen auf. Ich frage mich, warum jemand dort ein Haus gebaut hat.
Descending to the lake and suddenly there is an old house somewhere in the forest. I wonder what the purpose of it was.
Weiter beim Abstieg tauchten dann dicke Nebelschwaden auf. Es war warme und feuchte Luft die Aufstieg und es fühlte sich an, als ob man in der Nähe einer heißen Quelle ist.
Thick fog appeared while descending. It was warm and humid air, and it felt like being close to a hot spring.
Kurz vor Sonnenuntergang haben wir den See erreicht. Und ich war etwas enttäuscht. Als wir die Tour geplant haben, wusste ich noch nicht was populäre Ziele in Taiwan bedeuten. Ich dachte, wir werden alleine am See sein. Mein Wunsch wurde auch dadurch bestärkt, dass wir keine anderen Wanderer auf dem Weg getroffen haben. Aber in Taiwan ist man niemals allein. Das Seeufer war voll mit Zelten und Menschen. Sogar eine „Reisegruppe“ war dort.
Just before sunset we arrived the lake. And I was a little bit disappointed. When we planned the tour, I had no idea what it means to go to a popular spot in Taiwan. I thought that we will be alone there. Also we didn’t meet any other hiker on the way. But in Taiwan you are never alone. The lakeside was full with tents and other hikers. There was even a ‘travel group’ there.
Wir hatten gerade noch Zeit um den Sonnenuntergang zu genießen.
We just had enough time to enjoy the sunset.

Dann war es schon Zeit die Zelte wieder abzubrechen. Die Reisegruppe (die Menschenschlange im Hintergrund) hat gerade Frühsport gemacht. Sie hatten auch ihre Zelte auf einer Art Fundament aufgebaut, das auch noch mit einer großen Plane überdeckt war. Sie im Hintergrund wie ein riesiges Zelt aus.
It was time to pack our stuff and start to go back. The travel group (the line of people in the background) was just doing morning exercise. Their tents were setup on a paved ground which was covered by an additional large tarp (looks like a huge tent in the background).
Etwas neidisch war ich ja schon auf die Reisegruppe. Sie hatten Aborigines angeheuert, die einen großen Teil der Ausrüstung getragen haben.
I was a bit jealous of the travel group. They hired aborigines who helped them to carry the stuff.

Weitere informationen / additional information
Es ist schon einige Jahre als ich diese Wanderung gemacht habe. Bevor man geht, sollte man sich informieren, ob der Wanderweg noch offen ist und ob es möglich ist am See zu zelten. In der Vergangenheit war es zeitweise nicht erlaubt am See zu zelten.
Der Weg ist teilweise einfach zu gehen. Es gibt aber einige Abschnitte die etwas Klettern erfordern. Ich bewerte es als Level 5 (1 = sehr einfach, 5 = sehr schwer), hauptsächlich weil man einiges an Ausrüstung (Zelt, Verpflegung,…) mitnehmen muss und der Weg zum Teil sehr steil ist.
It is already a few years ago that I did this hike. Therefore I suggest to check if the trail is still open and if it is allowed to camp at the lakeside. A while ago it was not allowed to camp at the lakeside.
Most parts of the trail are easy to walk. There are a few parts which are steep and require climbing. I rate it as level 5 hike (1 = very easy, 5 = very difficult), mainly because you need to bring a lot of stuff (tent, food,…) and it is partly very steep.

Schoene Fotos – Von dem See habe ich auch schon gehört – sieht aus wie die Everglades. Ich müsste auch mal wieder raus, am meisten Spass macht sowas unter der Woche (wenn man die Zeit dazu hat)
🙂 Unter der Woche etwas zu unternehmen ist wirklich am besten, dann ist es schön leer. Aber wie du schon sagst, Zeit muss man haben.
