Erste Fotos mit der Beirette SL 100 N – First photos with the Beirette SL 100 N

Vor einiger Zeit habe ich bereits über meine Eindrücke zur Beirette SL 100 N geschrieben. Jetzt war es an der Zeit mit ihr zu fotografieren.

Da die Beirette das SL System nutzt und keine regulären 35 mm Filmpatronen passen, musste ich erstmal einen Film herstellen. Dazu habe ich, natürlich im Wechselsack, von einem Agfa APX 100 einen circa 50 cm langen Streifen abgeschnitten, was etwa 12 Aufnahmen entspricht. Den Filmstreifen habe ich dann buchstäblich in die SL Patrone gestopft. Ich brauchte recht viel Kraft, da die Öffnung der Patrone sehr eng war und zusätzlich die Form der Patrone ein einfaches umbiegen des Films erschwerte.

A few weeks ago I wrote about my first thoughts about the Beirette SL 100 N. Now it was time to go out and take some photos.

The Beirette does not use regular 35 mm film cartridges, instead it takes the so called SL system. Since there is no SL film available, I had to make my own. So I took an Agfa APX 100 film and cut off about 50 cm, which is roughly equivalent to 12 frames. Then I literally stuffed the film strip into the SL cartridge. It took quite some force to do this, because the opening of the cartridge is very narrow and the shape of the cartridge makes it difficult for the film to roll inside.

Die Kamera war sehr einfach zu benutzen. Gewöhnungsbedürftig fand ich, dass es kaum Rückmeldung gab. Der Verschluss arbeitete nahezu geräuschlos. Beim Weiterspulen des Films konnte man zwar einen leichten Widerstand spüren, aber ich war mir nie sicher, ob der Film auch jedes mal weiter bewegt wurde. Es gab auch keine Möglichkeit die Schärfe zu kontrollieren und bei diesem ersten Test wusste ich noch nicht, wie viel das Sucherfenster vom tatsächlichen Bildausschnitt zeigte. Für mich fühlte es sich an, als ob man blind fotografierte.

The camera was easy to use, however, it was a bit weird that there was almost no feedback. The shutter works almost silent. When advancing the film there was almost no resistance, so I was never sure if the film was moved forward or not. There was no control if something was in focus. And when I used the camera the first time, I even was not sure if the viewfinder shows the same as the lens would project onto the film.

Die große Überraschung kam nach Entwicklung des Films. Schon als ich den Film aus dem Entwicklungstank nahm, konnte ich sehen, dass die meisten Fotos nicht schlecht aussahen. Aber erst nach dem Scannen und etwas Bildbearbeitung zeigte sich, dass sie für so eine einfache Kamera wirklich gut sind. Durch die festen Belichtungszeiten waren einige Aufnahmen allerdings über- oder unterbelichtet, dennoch waren sie brauchbar.

The big surprise came after developing the film. When removing the film from the developing tank, I could already see that most of the images looked not bad. After scanning the negatives and some post-processing it turned out, that the images look actually quite good for such a simple camera. Due to the fixed shutter speeds most of the images were over or under exposed, nevertheless, they were still usable. 

Dieses Foto gefällt mir sehr, obwohl es alles andere als perfekt im technischen Sinne ist. Das Korn, die leichte Unschärfe und Vignettierung in den Ecken geben dem Bild ein interessantes Aussehen.

I like this photo a lot. The grain, the softness and vignetting in the corners give the image an interesting look.

Eine Straßenszene in meiner Nachbarschaft. Das Foto ist gut belichtet worden. Das Objektiv ist im Zentrum recht scharf, aber an den Ecken unscharf.

A street in my neighborhood. This image was exposed quite well. The lens is sharp in the center, but noticeably soft in the corners.

Etwas unterbelichtet, dennoch ein gutes Beispiel, dass scharfe Fotos mit der Kamera möglich sind.

A bit underexposed, but a good example that it is possible to take sharp photos with this camera.

Dieses Foto wurde leider komplett unterbelichtet. Ich denke, man muss lernen in welchen Lichtsituationen die Kamera vernünftige Aufnahmen machen kann. Die horizontalen Kratzer auf dem Negativ stammen von der Rückwand der Kamera. Der Film wird mit Hilfe von Plastikstreifen angepresst. Eine billige und sehr schlechte Lösung, wie man sieht.

Unfortunately this photo was totally underexposed. I think, it is important to learn in which light conditions the camera can work. The horizontal scratches on the negative are from the camera back. There are plastic stripes that should keep the film flat. A cheap and poor solution.

Bei den letzten Aufnahmen wurde der Film nicht mehr vollständig weiter transportiert, so dass sich die Bilder überlappen.

For the last frames the film was not transported completely, which resulted in overlapping images.

Es ergeben sich dann solche interessanten Doppelbelichtungen. Notiz an mich: Beim nächsten mal einen kürzeren Filmstreifen einlegen.

This created some interesting double exposures. Note to myself: Use next time a shorter strip of film.

Zusammenfassend kann ich sagen, dass mich die ersten Ergebnissen angenehm überrascht haben. Trotz der einfachen Konstruktion und Ausstattung kann man mit der Beirette brauchbare und interessante Fotos machen. Es ist eher eine Kamera für kreative Experimente.

In conclusion I can say, that the first results positively surprised me. Even though the camera is very simple, it is possible to take usable and interesting photos. This camera is more suitable for creative experiments.
