Ende letzten Jahres sind meine Schwiegereltern umgezogen. Vorher wurde die alte Wohnung gründlich ausgemistet und dabei haben sie eine alte Kamera gefunden. Da sie wussten, dass ich mit Film fotografiere, haben sie die Kamera mir gegeben.
Bei der Kamera handelt es sich um die Minolta Riva Zoom 75W. Sie ist in einem sehr guten Zustand. Komplett mit Fernbedienung, Tragetasche, original Karton, und Anleitungen. Gekauft im Februar 2001. Leider gab es keine Quittung mehr, so dass ich nicht weiß, was die Kamera hier in Taiwan gekostet hat. In Europa hat die Kamera damals etwa 180 Euro gekostet. Inflationsbereinigt wären das heute ca. 240 Euro. Also keine wirklich günstige Kamera. Vor allem war 2001 die Zeit, in der digitale Kameras ihren Siegeszug antraten. Ich hoffe, dass meine Schwiegereltern damals noch einen Rabatt bekommen haben. Heute wird die Kamera bei Ebay für Preise zwischen 10 und 50 Euro angeboten.
By the end of last year my parents in law moved to a new place. Before they cleaned out the old house and found an old camera. Since they knew, that I like analogue photography, they gave it to me.
The camera is a Minolta Riva Zoom 75W. It is in very good condition, and comes complete with remote control, pouch, original box and manuals. It was bought in February 2001. I couldn’t find the price for the camera here in Taiwan, but in Europe it was sold for around 180 Euro. In today’s money this would be about 240 Euro. Not a really cheap camera, considering that in 2001 digital cameras started to take off and replacing film cameras more and more. I hope my parents in law got a discount when they bought the Riva Zoom. Today you can get one on Ebay for 10 to 50 Euro.
Zu meiner Überraschung war in der Kamera noch ein alter Film: Kodak MAX 400. Im Internet liest man oft Geschichten, dass jemand eine Kamera auf dem Flohmarkt kauft und dann einen alten Film darin findet, auf dem unglaubliche, fantastische, historische Fotos sind. Ich hatte an diesen Geschichten immer gezweifelt, jetzt weiß ich, dass so etwas existiert.
To my surprise there was still a film in the camera: a Kodak MAX 400. In the internet there are often stories that someone buys an old camera in a thrift store or on a flea market and finds an old film inside, which contains unbelievable, awesome, historical photos. I had always my doubts with these stories, but now I know this exists.

Schnell neue Batterien gekauft, eingelegt und den Film gleich noch vollgeknipst. Nach dem Entwickeln und scannen war ich ein ganz klein wenig enttäuscht. Hatte ich doch unglaubliche, fantastische, historische Fotos erwartet. Aber es waren ganz gewöhnliche Familienschnappschüsse und Bilder von einem Ausflug vor 12 Jahren. Witzig war es schon einige Familienmitglieder 12 Jahre jünger zu sehen.
Die Filmqualität war nicht berauschend. Vermutlich war der Film einfach zu alt. Alle Fotos haben einen deutlichen Grünstich und haben teilweise eine starke Körnung. Auf einigen Bildern sieht man einen rötlichen vertikalen Streifen, der aussieht, als ob die Kamera nicht lichtdicht ist und das Negativ an einigen Stellen überbelichtet wurde. Hier sind zwei Beispielfotos, die die Qualität illustrieren sollen. Die restlichen Fotos will ich nicht zeigen, da sie entweder private Aufnahmen enthalten oder keine interessanten Motive zeigen.
I bought new batteries and finished the film. After developing and scanning I was a little bit disappointed. There were no unbelievable, awesome, historical photos. Only ordinary family photos and photos from a trip 12 years ago. However, it was funny to see some family members how they looked 12 years ago.
The quality of the film was not good. Probably the film was already too old. All images have a distinct green tint, and some of them were very grainy. Also on most of the photos there was a red vertical stripe, which looks like overexposure due to a light leak in the camera back. Here are two example photos to illustrate the film quality. I don’t want to show more photos, because either they are private or have no interesting subjects.
Ich war auch neugierig, ob die Kamera noch funktioniert und ob die Rückwand an einer Stelle tatsächlich lichtdurchlässig ist. Daher habe ich in einen guten Film investiert, Fujicolor PRO 400H, und hab in den letzten Wochen Fotos damit gemacht. Die Bedienung der Kamera war für mich etwas gewöhnungsbedürftig, da ich vollautomatische point-and-shoot Kameras nicht gewohnt bin. Nach einer Weile hatte ich mich daran gewöhnt und fand, dass die Kamera ein praktischer Begleiter für den Alltag ist. Sie macht auch recht ordentlich Bilder wie man auf den folgenden Beispielen sehen kann.
I was curious if the camera still works and if there is a problem with light leakage. Therefore I invested into a good film, Fujicolor PRO 400H, and I carried the camera with me for the last couple of weeks to take photos. In the beginning I had to get used to it, since I am not used to fully automatic point-and-shoot cameras. But after some time I got used to it. The camera makes quite decent pictures and there is no light leakage. No idea what caused the red stripe on the old photos. Below are some examples.
Das Weitwinkelobjektiv zeigt deutliche Vignettierung, was aber nicht unbedingt schlecht sein muss. Man kann damit einen interessanten look erzeugen. ~ The wide angle lens shows some strong vignetting, which isn’t particularly bad, as it can be used to create an interesting look.
Das Objektiv ist ausreichend scharf. Perfekte schärfe kann man von einer Kamera in der Preisklasse aber auch nicht erwarten. ~ Sharpness of the lens is okay, on the other hand, you cannot expect a razor sharp lens from a camera in this price range.
Der Belichtungsmesser arbeitet sehr gut. Trotz sehr hellem Himmel wurde der dunkle Bereich unter dem Dach gut belichtet. ~ The exposure meter works very well. Despite the bright sky, the dark part under the roof was still well exposed.
Fazit
Diese kleine Kamera war eine nette Überraschung für mich. Obwohl man, außer den Blitz ein- und ausschalten, manuell nichts steuern kann, macht sie brauchbare Fotos. Der Belichtungsmesser arbeitet auch in schwierigen Situationen, z.B. im Gegenlicht, vernünftig. Bei meinem Testfilm gab es keine über- oder unterbelichteten Bilder. Das Objektiv ist ausreichend scharf, aber wie oben schon erwähnt, kann man bei einer Kamera dieser Preisklasse kein superscharfes Objektiv erwarten. Das Weitwinkelobjektiv hat eine deutliche Vignettierung. Kann man mit leben, ich persönlich finde es nicht gut. Die Bedienung ist sehr einfach: einschalten, zoomen, Auslöser drücken. Da die Minolta Riva auch sehr kompakt und leicht ist, eignet sie sich gut als ständiger Begleiter um spontan mal hier und da ein Foto zu knipsen.
Conclusion
This little camera was a neat surprise for me. Even though there are no manual controls on this camera, except switching the flash on or off, it takes pretty decent photos. The exposure meter works pretty well and it can handle difficult situation, like backlit settings. There was not a single under or overexposed photo on the roll. The sharpness of the lens okay, but as mentioned earlier, you cannot expect a razor sharp lens for a camera in this price range. The wide angle lens has strong vignetting. The camera is very easy to operate, and since it is so compact and light, it is a nice camera to bring along to take photos.
